Out on the mountainVail Gay Ski Week kicking off todayGene Davis, DDN Staff WriterWednesday, January 27, 2010 | | | GAY SKI WEEK — A group of guys enjoy last week’s Aspen Gay Ski Week. Vail Gay Ski Week is going on this week. |
January is a good month to be a gay skier or snowboarder in Colorado.
Hot on the heels of Aspen Gay Ski Week is Vail Gay Ski Week, a five-day GLBT-friendly event kicking off today. Event organizers are positioning Vail Gay Ski Week as an affordable outing that provides good times for a good cause.
“Vail Gay Ski Week’s mission is to host a five-day ski event that has a friendly, home-grown, fun and exciting atmosphere that raises awareness on the behalf of the GLBT community,” writes Tommy Hoffman, the founder of Vail Gay Ski Week and RockyMountainVacationRentals.com.
This year’s Vail Gay Ski Week is a much more colorful affair than Hoffman’s previous two attempts to host a gay ski week. Everything from “Livid Lesbian Wrestling” to spa parties are going on to ensure that attendees can have just as much fun off the slopes as on them.
Along with the partying and carving on the slopes is a worthy mission; Vail Gay Ski Week hopes to raise $10,000 for the GLBT Community Center of Colorado throughout the week. Fundraising events like the Angel Wings Benefit Dinner, Vail Splash Club and Pancake Breakfasts will go towards helping them accomplish their goal.
Vail’s Gay Ski Week is starting only three days after Aspen Gay Ski Week wrapped up. Organizers of the Aspen event say last week was the best gay ski week the mountain town has had in five years.
“I think all in all the enthusiasm is back,” said Peter Helburn, executive director of Aspen Gay Ski Week. “Now it’s up to us to take the ball and run with it.”
Vail Gay Ski Week organizers are likely hoping that Aspen’s success will spill over to their success.
