Are fetuses like slaves?Personhood campaign announces radio spot and strategyPeter Marcus, DDN Staff WriterTuesday, July 27, 2010 | |
Backers of a ballot initiative asking Colorado voters to essentially ban abortion in the state announced their campaign strategy yesterday, a strategy that includes comparing fetuses to slaves.
Members of Personhood Colorado unveiled their first campaign advertisement at a news conference at the Capitol. The radio ad, which will be aired in the coming days, compares the rights of fetuses to American slaves.
It features a fictitious slave by the name of George Stevens who says he fought to end the practice of declaring people as property.
“I fought so all slaves would be recognized as persons, not property, and we won,” says Stevens in the radio spot, as patriotic war music plays in the background. “But today in Colorado there are sill people called property Ń children Ń just like I was. And that America you thought you wouldn’t recognize is all around you, and these children are being killed.”
The ad asks voters this November to vote “yes” on Amendment 62 because the measure declares unborn children persons, not property.
“And that’s the America I fought for,” concludes the ad.
The news conference yesterday was attended by former Republican presidential hopeful Alan Keyes, as well as faith leaders who support the initiative.
The proposal would define the term “person” in the state constitution as being from the “beginning of the biological development of that human being.”
The Personhood Colorado campaign has also launched a Web site, MyCampaignTracker.org, to convince voters to back Amendment 62. Keith Mason, founder of Pesonhood USA and a leader of the campaign, said yesterday that the Web site, which encourages grassroots participation, has already generated 1,300 volunteers in about three weeks.
“It’s not even campaign season yet,” said Mason. “We’re pretty impressed with it; we’re pretty excited.”
The news conference yesterday also included Benjamin Goss, the current gubernatorial pick for the American Constitution Party. Conservative Tom Tancredo is in negotiations with Goss to replace him as the American Constitution Party gubernatorial pick. Goss said he will only vacate as a candidate if Tancredo supports Amendment 62.
The Personhood initiative would essentially ban abortions in Colorado, making it illegal for doctors to perform the medical procedure. Proponents are not shy about acknowledging that their goal is to ban abortion.
They say the initiative is needed now more than ever given controversial DNA experiments. Co-sponsor of the ballot initiative, Gualberto Garcia Jones, believes it is important to include even asexual forms of human reproduction, such as if science leads to cloning human beings.
“We would like all human beings, regardless of how they come about, to be covered, because unfortunately there’s the possibility that cloning is going on right now, and we want them to be covered as well,” Garcia Jones told the Denver Daily News.
A similar effort failed in 2008 when it received only 27 percent of the vote. But proponents this year believe they will be boosted by the conservative grassroots movement. They also believe that tweaking the language of the initiative by slashing the term “fertilization” from the ballot question will appeal better to voters.
Opponents are running a campaign of their own. Protect Families Protect Choices (ProtectFamiliesProtectChoices.org) says it has begun an “aggressive” campaign against Amendment 62.
One of the biggest concerns to opponents is that Personhood measures could turn doctors into criminals by making it illegal to perform in vitro fertilization procedures, prescribing birth control pills, or even conducting emergency procedures on pregnant women, such as if a fertilized egg becomes lodged in a woman’s fallopian tubes.
Opponents also raise fears over the possibility of the ballot initiative essentially banning abortion and paving the way for a challenge of Roe v. Wade, setting a precedent for cases across the country.

| Rita Joseph @ 2010-07-27 02:53:44 | No mother has absolute ownership rights over the child being protected and nurtured in her womb.
In effect, abortionists reduce the child before birth to an object, a ‘choice’, a thing of less-than-human status, suspended in a slave-like state between life and death, pending an arbitrary decision by the “owner” to abort or to keep the child.
Article 8 of the ICCPR codifies Article 4 of the Universal Declaration and explicitly prohibits slavery “in all its forms”. It is difficult to construe the condition or status of the child at risk of abortion as anything but a form of slavery, in which the concepts of ‘ownership’ and ‘absolute power’ over a dependent are used to violate human dignity and rights.
* Decriminalization of abortion is essentially an attempt to effect “the destruction of the juridical personality of the victim”, the unborn child; and
* the concept of a mother’s right to abort the life of her own child is certainly at the extreme end of servitude, the most extreme of “all possible forms of one person’s domination of another.”
To accord mothers the “right” to abort their children is to allow them the most pernicious of all the powers attaching to the alleged rights of ownership and domination—powers of life and death. The pseudo-right to abortion stands in direct contradiction to the long, hard-won tradition of human rights and freedoms, a tradition forbidding that any one human being should have ownership and disposal rights over any other human being, no matter how small or dependent or troublesome or unwanted.

| AW @ 2010-07-27 11:11:06 | Seriously, Rita Joseph . Slavery?!? You would take rights away from the mother and give them to a fertilized egg???? You are so far off base, I can hardly believe it. You say that abortion is a form of legalized slavery, but if you learned more about Amendment 62, you would find that it opens the doors for further legislation that would go far beyond what you had hoped for and intended. "Personhood measures could turn doctors into criminals by making it illegal to perform in vitro fertilization procedures, prescribing birth control pills, or even conducting emergency procedures on pregnant women, such as if a fertilized egg becomes lodged in a woman’s fallopian tubes." Is that really what we want? Is that progress? Is that a victory for human rights?
You're delusional. You can illegalize abortion, but the abortions will continue - count on it. They won't be performed in a clean facility with sterile instruments. It'll happen in your city's back alleys and housing projects. Pimps will rip the life out of prostitutes. 16 year old girls, in fear of public humiliation and the ruination of their families, will seek abortions on the black market. Do you know how many will die from this? You can't even fathom the number - all you seem to count is the unborn.
Of course, a lot of this could have been and can be avoided if you right-wing, bible-thumping radicals would just educate your children in matters of safe sex, adoption possibilities AND abstinence, and not just the latter. Face it, Rita - people are going to continue having sex (safe and otherwise, CONSENSUAL and otherwise) and people are going to continue to seek abortions. It is up to you and me to fight band-aid solutions like Amendment 62 and face these facts. only then can we actually stitch this wound in society.
Serously. Get a clue. For the good of your State's constitution, and for yourselves and your children. |

| AJ @ 2010-07-27 14:37:53 | I just meant that if you're going to start telling people what to do with their bodies, or calling people pro-death for that matter, then you probably ought to have three or four crack babies in your home before I can take you seriously. Thanks steve. |

| Lucy @ 2010-07-27 16:36:02 | The comparison is ludicrous and irrelevant. Slaves were living breathing people. They had a conscience brain, life experiences and the will to live free. A embryo/fetus has no conscience brain and couldn't care less if it is ever born. Plus, this nuts ignore the fact that women are not forced to get abortions. Now, if slaves had walk up to plantations voluntarily and asked to be beaten and sold, then there might be some relevance. This is typical of the nuts. They think a 2 inch fetus should have more rights than the living breathing already born woman! |

Would you like to debate founder of the California Civil Rights Foundation, Pastor Walter Hoye about your claims on air?
We can arrange for that next week.

| TK in TX @ 2010-07-27 20:17:44 | Um, Lucy, you said, "A embryo/fetus has no conscience brain and couldn't care less if it is ever born." That's a temporary state. If we use your standards, it's legal to kill people who are sleeping or really drunk, too.
Regarding forced abortions, the latest number was 64% are coerced or forced. Read up before you spout, amiga. |

If you don't agree that it is okay to kill babies, don't kill yours.
huh? |

| dianne @ 2010-07-28 14:00:55 | If you are successful in your
Radical Religious fight to deny women control of their bodies , what sets you apart from any other Religious nuts in the world?
Education and Birth control are the answer. You may make it abortion illegal but you will never stop rape!
If you think a 13 year old child impregnated by a drunk relative should be forced to have a child and claim Gawds will. You are infact crazy.
No one should be forced to have an abortion. or forced to have a child. Look at the Blue states. Later marriage, birthcontrol, fewer divorces, les crime, fewer in prison, higher education.
Ignorant is as Ignorant is. Stick to your erectile disfunction. Leave women's rights alone! |

| Julie @ 2010-07-29 10:08:28 | So he would like to make women slaves!! I guess having sex or being raped now means women lose the right to their bodies and the right to make decisions to what happens to their bodies. Love how these anti-choicers(really anti-lifers) forget women are human too.
If we did the same to men, you lose the right to what happens to your body and privates if you have sex, their would be hell to pay. |

| PD @ 2010-07-29 15:12:03 | @TK - I agree with you regarding consciousness being the criteria. But I think Lucy is on the right track here. The real issue is that embryos and fetuses live INSIDE a woman's body. There is no comparable situation. Our feelings and values around pregnancy are complicated but one thing is very simple: pregnancy is a unique state and only women experience it. And every woman's experience of pregnancy is different. Personally I do not understand how we can value an embryo/fetus over the woman gestating it. Only the pregnant woman can choose to do that. And I trust in women's capacity to make those decisions for themselves. |

| Marsha @ 2010-07-30 16:00:39 | Very, very clever, anti-women people! What a devious little turn of events - a fetus is a slave. Wow. Now to MY way of thinking, the pregnant woman is the slave, because her body has been taken over by an alien being with different genetic makeup, a being that forces the woman to feed it and dispose of its waste at all hours of the night and day, and having the capability to kill her under the right circumstances. This slave-woman should use the Declaration of Human Rights to free herself to live as an independent being once again. (Thanks for the strange, but quite helpful, new tactic!) |

| Nickie @ 2010-07-31 08:34:43 | I don't know if I will ever understand. I am also definately not anti-woman, for I am all woman. A fetus is a child. How could killing it justify a womans rights? Women who get abortions in the case of rape are insanely small. Most women have other reasons (most often selfish) for getting abortions I.e. Finish school, too many children already, not the right time. A woman, a slave to her baby? Ok if you can count that, more often she would be a willing slave. Not that she wanted to get pregnant, but safe sex or not, pregnancy is a chance she takes when she chooses to have sex and more often than not she consents. Again look at the facts, a very small percentage of women get an abortion because of forced sex. A fetus has no brain? It's always funny I was not aware that a babies brain started to work when he/she takes her first breath. From what I know the heart starts at around 6 weeks. Wouldn't the baby need a brain for that? Parents can chose what is best to teach their children according to each families values. Safe sex still does not prevent pregnancy, it just lowers the risk, so logically not having sex is the only way to insure not getting pregnant. Crack babies, I would gladly take as many as I can afford. Life is worth so much. Some of the most world changing people came from the accidents you would least expect. Look at Einstein. I am not sure women are very educated on abortions when they get them. They are happy to donate their unborn babies to science. The sad part, abortion clinics make a small fortune selling body parts for profit. Everypart is worth money, the fresher the better. Abortion clinics are making money on both ends, for the abortion and selling the poor baby. Educate yourself before you fight for or against something. Know that there is always another choice and that there are always people who want to help. I know personally of places that will take in pregnant women for free and help with their situation. The fast fix may not be the best. Isn't a life worth "enslaving yourself for a few months". How selfish are we to kill in order to look nice or get an education, or any of the number of reasons. Giving a life is beautiful and doesn't have to effect everyone forever. Adoption is also beautiful. I understand not wanting someone to raise your child, but would you rather kill your baby, or give him or her a chance, a life. |
